I was initially contacted by Griffin Roberts with Cogent Analytics as what I would describe as a “cold call” to come in and discuss our business operations and whether we felt Cogent could assist in getting us back on track to becoming profitable. I decided to move forward with utilizing Cogent’s services, and this has been one of the best business decisions I have made.
We agreed to a “Discovery” with Merlin VanGerpen who spent 3 days analyzing our current business structure and helping me as the owner, understand where we needed to make some changes in order to accomplish this. One of the biggest changes he emphasized was the fact that as the owner of the business, I needed to move away from owning the “job” and to begin to “own the business” as well as to reinforce the fact that “hope is NOT a strategy.”
I have found that working with Cogent Analytics has been a very informative and rewarding experience for not only myself, but also my leadership team. We had the opportunity of working with John McNichols as the Project Manager and he has helped in a number of ways including excellent training to the leadership team as well as front line staff to ensure my business will be poised for sale when that time comes.
As the engagement is coming to a close, I can confirm that Cogent has provided great value to the organization. We now have a detailed plan of how to move towards and achieve the goals we all agreed on. These plans include developing Roles & Responsibilities for not only our leadership team, but also for all employees. These Roles/Responsibilities included developing Key Performance Indicators to offer clear and defined accountability for our staff and we are all excited about utilizing these.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with Cogent Analytics. It has been a pleasure watching the leadership teamwork work so closely with John and embrace the idea of running the company as a team and not as individuals running departments.
I can say with confidence that the entire team will miss John once the engagement concludes and we will look forward to his weekly virtual visits and his quarterly on-site visits during the Lifecycle Relationship phase.

This Monday would be the start of many more weeks of training under the influence of a US Army Veteran, MBA and Fortune 500 business consultant, Randolph Brauer.
Over the next few weeks our team would gain new tools to better the company, employees and customers. Not only did we gain tools that would help us in our performance and financial goals, but we gained strength as a team to lead and manage the company. Thoughts on ERD’s Projects with Cogent. From first meeting with Merlin, it was obvious that some people fit their names, and he did perform quick magic on many aspects within a few hours of analyzing our company.
We had a previous project with Cogent in late 2021 and based on those changes and our seemingly daunting task of instantly growing over 500% within 6 months, we desired a more thorough look which could enable ERD to transition to a bigger and better company. Merlin listened to our specific needs and tailored a path of success that we could clearly follow and simultaneously buy into since, in the end, any plan can only be successful if everyone believes.
This early work by Merlin led to his advocating for us to have Jim as a project manager for what we needed for our transition. Jim is an example of a guy who knows accounting but does not let accounting be the only thing to focus on (he’s a numbers guy, but understands that the true power of the numbers is to benefit all aspects of a thriving business). He has taken the time and effort to guide us on the journey of improvement which a 27-year-old company needs in order to be fully competitive and successful in the current economic environment.
Jim has identified a large area of improvements in terms of KPl’s and has structured a path that achieves measurable progress but also takes into account the softer side of how to get people to actively participate.
The management team and workforce have fully embraced our mission, and we look forward to our future success in both the implementation of our action plan as well as how we have enabled true change to our culture that allows us to be the best organization we can be.

Our experience with Cogent Analytics has been a very positive and beneficial one. Before the project began, it felt like we certainly knew about some of the things we were looking for help to solve. We found several more during discovery. Throughout the process, Cogent made clear the expectations and goals that were to be met.
Prior to the project, our 44 year old manufacturing company had never been through a process like this. No other company besides the bank had ever seen our financials, we had 30 year employees who were never asked to report at a meeting. We were having trouble making money, recruiting, retaining good employees and offering competitive wages. The compensation plan on the factory floor didn’t match the company’s goals. Our work force was balanced with dedicated, long time employees and a revolving door of new hires.
Agreeing to the discovery was a big step for us, and our analyst did a full company culture review interviewing all staff members at every level. Also during discovery was full financial review that opened our eyes to several areas where we were leaving margin on the table. After we agreed to a detailed project plan, they got to work the next day. We met our project director as well as several other offsite folks that were assigned to us immediately. We agreed further on addressing our company profitability, accountability framework, and added KPI controls.
Throughout the project, our project director was the first one there and the last one to leave each day, while coaching and training our managers on how we are going to meet our goals. Each week, we had a comprehensive status update meeting that detailed what we had completed. We studied the project plan discussed next priorities. The final part of the project to be dropped in place was a brand new compensation plan for our entire company, focused on gross margins, evaluation scores, and productivity. Management here had discussed implementation of a system like this for decades. Cogent implemented a robust system promoting buy in across the organization in about 2 months time.

Spyglass Solutions has been very happy with Cogent Analytics services. Our understanding of Cogent’s services began with our initial meeting with Eli Shapiro. Eli was very personable and flexible following up with Spyglass. He made time to educate us about the value Cogent could provide to Spyglass.
During the “discovery” phase of Cogent’s services we worked with Kevin Cummins to identify areas of concern and strength. From our initial meeting with Trevor it was clear he would be a great coach and mentor to the Spyglass leadership team. Trevor quickly “read the room” and understood the atmospherics within the business. Spyglass and Cogent quickly got to work assessing the business and identifying the critical areas to work on. In Spyglass’s case it was business development. We focused on building the plan to grow Spyglass’s customer base and decrease our customer concentration. Spyglass and Trevor conducted several exercises such as the Golden Circle, opportunity wall, and key stack holder interview. Spyglass made “money” during the high intensity phase developing key performance indicators, a cash management system, budget, strategic recruiting plan, employee retention credit (ERC), and many other tools. Spyglass and Trevor developed our “lifecycle” phase plan of action. Spyglass is looking forward to our weekly conversations and three week long sessions with Trevor in upcoming year.
