Platform Concepts

First, you’ll need to “Lead” not “Run” your company.
Second, you’ll need an Organizational System.
Third, you’ll need a Procedural System.
Fourth, you’ll need a Reporting System.

These four interdependent systems are found within Cogent’s “Performance Optimization Plan” which is diagrammed to the right. It is important for a Business Owner to understand that this model is their set of tools to conduct effective and profitable business operations. For “Leadership” to occur, the Business Owner must work outside of the model each day to make sure all elements of the model are functioning as planned, like a “Well Oiled Machine”. Doing so will place you in a perfect position to “Work on the Business of your Business”.

Business Leadership

Managers Do Things Right; Leaders Do The Right Things.

Managers work to get their employees to do what they did yesterday, but a little faster and a little cheaper. Leaders, on the other hand, know where they’d like to go, but understand that they can’t get there without their tribe, without giving those they lead the tools to make something happen.

Managers want authority. Leaders take responsibility. We need both. But we have to be careful not to confuse them. And it helps to remember that leaders are scarce and thus more valuable. For true leadership to occur, the business owner must work outside of the model each day to make sure all the elements of the model are functioning as planned, like a well-oiled machine.

They need to learn how to duplicate themselves and become systems dependent not people dependent. Focused and guided activity within your business will take place of discretionary activity so you can have the control of the things you want to do instead of the things you have to do.

Organizational Engineering

Are You Working Your Systems Or Are They Working You?

This component of Cogent’s Performance Optimization Platform specifies relationships along with roles and responsibilities within any business. When properly prepared, it will become the basis of a tactical growth plan. The business leader will clearly see the dispersion of work activity and will be equipped to the efforts of key employees in critical areas.

Cogent helps business owners clearly see the dispersion of work activity and equips them to focus their efforts of key employees in critical areas. An important concept, which is well understood by many business owners, is that organizational systems are vertical in nature.

Cogent’s design of organizational systems is carried out using development and review processes, which have been, over and over, proven to work. The core of this development work includes a combination of employee interviews, formal employee surveys, and objective business assessments.

Organizational design is a combination of a systematic process and a real “art” form. Guidance will be provided to implement the organizational system, which is customized to your business, as it exists today.

Procedural Systems

Never Mistake Motion For Action.

This component of Cogent’s Performance Optimization Platform defines the “How We Do It” within your company. The development or use of this component is an integral part of successfully implementing a quality deliverable as it provides everyone within an organization with the right information to perform their jobs properly, and facilitates consistency in the quality and integrity of a product or end-result.

The development and use of Cogent’s Procedural System helps businesses to minimize variation and promotes quality through consistent implementation of a true process or procedure within their organization.

Our aim is to help owners and their companies ensure a high level of quality for behind-the-scenes business operations in addition to the actual products or services offered by their companies. By developing and implementing this very important component we will give our client’s employees, customers and vendors more confidence in the professionalism of their organizations.

Reporting Systems

If You Can’t Measure It; You Can’t Manage it.

Effectively interlocking a formalized organizational system with a well-designed procedural system will provide results which will be accurately measured.

Measuring results in the most proper and timely manner will dramatically optimize business decision making.

Results must be fed back to the employee team within the organization to make sure they understand the score. Without knowing the score, the employees will not understand how to play the game.

Building a proper and effective reporting system requires some diligent work along with a good share of creativity.

Using and sharing your results information is a fundamental requirement for business success. The right information will provide for clarity in business decision making, both tactically and strategically.
